Goode: Bill to honor Hoosier first responders passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (March 4, 2024) — A bill sponsored by State Sen. Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute) to establish the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor will now head to the governor's desk.

House Enrolled Act 1142 would create the model and allow the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to determine if an Indiana first responder is eligible for the medal based on their service to the state.

"First responders put their lives on the line every day they put on their uniform," Goode said. "Whether they are responding to a crash on the side of the road, entering a burning building or shielding Hoosiers from criminals, our first responders work hard to protect lives across Indiana."

The bill received bipartisan support in both chambers.

"Creating this medal will recognize our state's police, fire and emergency medical personnel who go above and beyond the call of duty to protect Hoosiers," Goode said. "I am pleased to see the bill pass with widespread support and move to the governor's desk."
