Goode: Bill to help keep Indiana soil and water clean passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (March 5, 2024) — A bill sponsored by State Sen. Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute) that aims to help keep Indiana soil and water clean unanimously passed the Senate Tuesday, March 5.

House Bill 1242 would allow the Indiana Department of Environmental Affairs (IDEM) to implement an Excess Liability Trust Fund claim to replace petroleum tanks being decommissioned and replaced with an underground or aboveground storage tank, including those at airports like Terre Haute Regional Airport.

The bill also allows any remaining funds in the trust from one fiscal year to be rolled over into the next fiscal year.

"Our state's Excess Liability Trust Fund is one of the most successful cleanup program in IDEM's history, and I'm especially glad to see it benefiting the Wabash Valley by assisting Terre Haute Regional Airport in its efforts to replace its petroleum tanks," Goode said. "I am proud to have this bill pass the Senate with such widespread support among my colleagues."

HB 1242 would build upon Senate Enrolled Act 246, which unanimously passed the General Assembly in 2023, and has the support of the Indiana Food and Fuel Association, Aviation Indiana and Hoosier Environmental Council.

The Senate amended HB 1242 and the bill now returns to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
