Get to Know: Sen. Aaron Freeman

Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Many Hoosiers know State Senator Aaron Freeman (R-Indianapolis) for his previous role on the Indianapolis City-Council and his new seat in the Indiana Senate. But they may not know about his background that led him to where he is today.

Life outside of the Statehouse

Freeman has called Indiana his home since the seventh grade. He moved from Ohio to Brookville, Indiana, and attended Franklin County High School.

The move and change in schools were difficult for him, but he immediately loved one thing about the Hoosier state – basketball. He played in both middle and high school.

“When I think of Indiana, the first thing I think about is basketball,” he said. “High school basketball in Indiana is like nothing other in the country.”

As a teenager, basketball was not the senator’s only interest. When not at school or practice, he road in the back of an ambulance, volunteering as an emergency medical technician (EMT).

“I was running back and forth on an ambulance as an intern just kind of learning what EMTs do and did back then,” he said.

It was this experience that helped him choose a career field. He got his EMT license and decided he was destined for the police force.

“I really thought that I wanted to be an Indiana state trooper,” he said. “Many of them convinced me that I could do more good by becoming a lawyer than I could by joining the ranks.”

Taking the policemen’s advice, Freeman started writing the next chapter of his life and went to law school at the University of Dayton. After graduating, he worked as a prosecutor and started his own law firm, the Aaron Freeman Law Office.

Today, Freeman has moved to yet another chapter in his life, fatherhood. He lives with his wife and two sons, Jack and Cooper, in Marion County.

“My spare time is spent chasing a six-year-old and a four-year-old at the present moment,” he said. “If it’s not chasing them around the house for some reason, it’s chasing them out in the yard.”

Election to the Senate

While basketball, EMT work, law school and fatherhood have been defining moments in Freeman’s life, he now has another.

As a new senator, his goal is to learn the ropes.

“I’ve got several bills that I’ve proposed, and they’re making their way through the process,” he said. “I don’t know what to expect necessarily in your very first session, other than the reading is tremendous. I’ve read a lot more than I have ever probably expected to read.”

Freeman added that finding his way around is half the battle.

“My goals were to be on time and to know what I’m doing, and I think so far we’re doing fine, and if we get some bills through that can help the citizens along the way, I think that’ll be a great achievement.”
