Garten celebrates launch of Southern Indiana Aviation Initiative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SELLERSBURG (Jan. 23, 2026) — Senate Majority Floor Leader Chris Garten (R-Charlestown) joined officials from Prosser Career Education Center, New Albany Floyd County Schools, Vincennes University, and Clark Regional Airport, and the private sector today to celebrate the launch of the Southern Indiana Aviation Initiative.

The initiative involves a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare local high school students, and other adult learners, for high-demand careers in the aviation industry.

In 2025, Garten, in collaboration with other area legislators, successfully secured $6.5 million in the state's biennial budget to fund half of the project’s capital needs. This state investment is supported by significant private contributions from the Caesars Foundation and CenterPoint Energy, whose generosity was pivotal in bringing this project to life.

"With the UPS Worldport in Louisville and the FedEx Express Hub in Indianapolis, Southern Indiana is situated in a global aviation corridor," Garten said. "However, infrastructure alone isn't enough; we need a skilled workforce ready to seize these opportunities. I was proud to fight for this funding in the state budget because it effectively ensures our region remains competitive for decades to come.

Through the initiative, students can select from two specialized pathways: Aviation Flight or Aviation Maintenance. These programs allow students to earn dual credits and accelerate their path toward post-secondary degrees and certifications.

"We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Caesars Foundation and CenterPoint Energy for their generous support. This initiative is a prime example of a successful public-private partnership," Garten said. "This historic investment is an example of a public-private partnership investing in what matters most, our youth. We are not just educating students; we are building a pipeline to high-paying careers that will undoubtedly help families, right here in Southern Indiana."
