STATEHOUSE (April 3, 2023) — A bill sponsored by State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute) that would establish a worksite speed control pilot program to enforce speed limits in work zones passed the Indiana Senate today with bipartisan support.
House Bill 1015 would require the Indiana Department of Transportation to work with the Indiana State Police to help install cameras that would take pictures of license plates of vehicles traveling 11 mph or more over a posted speed limit in an active work zone.
This program would be situated in four locations of the state at any given time.
"House Bill 1015 is aimed to slow down motorists as they drive through work zones in Indiana," Ford said. "I am happy to see the Senate pass the bill with bipartisan support and work to protect Hoosiers travelling along and working on our highways."
According to INDOT, there were 2,800 worksite crashes in 2019 resulting in 824 injuries and 15 fatalities.
These numbers increased in 2022 to 7,017 worksite crashes resulting in 1,426 injuries and 31 deaths.
The bill would require the presence of a sign in the work zone to notify motorists that speeds are being enforced with a camera.
The first offense would be a warning and the second would include a $75 fine.
Because the bill was amended in the Senate, it will move back to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration.
