Freeman: Memorializing a friend and colleague

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 23 , 2024) — State Sen. Aaron Freeman today presented Senate Resolution 3 to the Senate, which memorializes the late State Sen. Jack E. Sandlin.

Sandlin passed away unexpectedly Sept. 20, 2023. He represented Senate District 36, which includes portions of Johnson and Marion counties.

“I have truly felt Jack’s absence,” Freeman said. “He was a mentor who became a close friend. We worked together frequently on our legislation and occupations outside of the Senate.”

As a dedicated public servant, Sandlin fulfilled many roles. To honor his country, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He also served as deputy chief of the Indianapolis Police Department, as a member of the Southport Police Department, as Perry Township Trustee and as an Indianapolis City-County Councilman. However, the most important to him was being the role of family man. His greatest joy was his wife, daughter and grandchildren.

“This resolution is to memorialize an admirable man of integrity and grit,” Freeman said. “He fought for what was right and representative of his community. We could all take note of Jack’s leadership and continue to work towards the greater good of our state.

“I am honored to be the one that introduced this resolution to remember a dear friend. May his legacy continue to inspire us all.”
