Enforcing Immigration Laws and Protecting Hoosiers

Friday, October 24, 2025

The Biden administration's failure to secure our borders allowed millions of illegal immigrants to enter the United States, resulting in a rise of deadly drugs and crime across all 50 states.

While we are not a border state, the consequences of the Biden administration's weak border policies are being felt across the whole country, including here in Indiana.

That’s why Senate Republicans have supported many new laws to crack down on illegal immigration and keep Hoosiers safe.

One new law we supported requires county sheriffs to notify ICE if there is evidence a person arrested for a crime in Indiana is in the country illegally.

Working alongside our ICE notification law, another new law allows courts to increase the length of a criminal convict's sentence if they are illegally in our country. Under President Trump's leadership, the federal government is rightly deporting illegal immigrants who commit further crimes in the U.S., but if any such convict isn't deported, this state law would allow them to serve more prison time.

Another law Senate Republicans supported makes it a crime to get a driver's license, vehicle title or vehicle registration with the intent to pass on the license or vehicle to someone who can’t legally drive in Indiana. This law aims to stop "straw man" actors who get vehicle identification and registration on behalf of illegal immigrants who can't get them on their own.

All of these actions come on the heels of a 2024 law we passed that strengthened Indiana's ban on sanctuary cities by authorizing the Attorney General to sue any local government that refuses to cooperate with immigration law enforcement.

Through responsible leadership at the state level, Indiana has become a national leader in enforcing immigration laws and protecting its citizens. Senate Republicans are committed to finding more ways we can ensure Hoosier communities remain safe, our nation's borders are secure and our immigration laws are upheld across the state.
