Dernulc: Bill to mitigate unnecessary license suspension passes committee

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 26, 2024) — A bill authored by State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) that would mitigate license suspension with regard to proof of insurance issues was amended and passed out of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

With the amendment, Senate Bill 19 would allow the compliance period to be extended for an additional 90 days for Hoosiers who did not provide a proof of insurance upon the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' (BMV) request following an accident. If a Hoosier believes their license was suspended in error, the individual can request a material error review, which will quickly allow an extra 90 days to show proof of insurance.

"I enjoyed working with the BMV and my fellow legislators to get this piece of legislation to a place where it can move forward and help the Hoosiers who are victims of unnecessary license suspension," Dernulc said. "I look forward to continuing my work on this issue and seeing what else we can do to help Hoosiers in these situations."

SB 19 will now move to the full Senate for further consideration.
