Dernulc: Bill improving the sale of utility trailers goes to governor's desk

STATEHOUSE (April 22, 2025) A bill authored by State Sen. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) that would improve the sale of utility trailers passed the Senate and the House of Representatives unanimously today.

Senate Enrolled Act 73 would take utility trailers out of the definition of "motor vehicle" to make it easier for big box stores to sell them. Right now, these stores need a distributor license from the Secretary of State's office to sell trailers even though they shouldn't be considered vehicles.

SEA 73 was sent to conference committee due to language the House of Representatives amended in that was deemed non-germane by the Senate. This language was taken out by the conference committee and the bill then passed both chambers in the form as it originally passed the Senate.

"This bill has taken many forms over the last few weeks, but I am happy to say it has made its way back to its original purpose, and think it will help many Hoosiers looking to sell trailers in Indiana," Dernulc said. "I appreciate all who put work into making this bill better, and I look forward to it becoming law."

SEA 73 will now move to the governor's desk for final consideration.
