STATEHOUSE (Nov. 21, 2023) — State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) gathered with fellow legislators today at the Statehouse for Organization Day – the ceremonial start of the Indiana General Assembly.
Organization Day marks the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers, but the day also provides members of the Senate and House of Representatives with the opportunity to meet before session officially reconvenes in January.
For Deery, the day began with an important meeting with key legislative leaders on the topic of water.
"Local Republican legislators were invited to meet with leadership this morning and present our concerns and ideas for ways to move forward," Deery said. "We have always said we knew we would never get everything we wanted in terms of changes to the proposal, but we would fight for everything we could to protect our community and our water."
Deery added these legislators left the meeting with important commitments.
"First, the pipeline will not move forward without it being backed financially by the General Assembly, and that is not going to happen this session," Deery said. "Second, we have the support of leadership to work with relevant stakeholders to craft a bill that would establish basic guardrails that would help protect all communities against any potential harm of large water transfers to another community. Improving Indiana's water planning policies to protect communities like ours will be a long-term effort, but I am optimistic that we can build from this foundation."

By state law, the 2024 session will conclude on or before March 14.
