STATEHOUSE (Aug. 20, 2026) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.
Represented by State Sen. Gary Byrne (R-Byrneville) and State Rep Karen Engleman (R-Georgetown), seven locally owned farms were honored at the Indiana State Fair.
• The Blank-Gleitz farm in Harrison County received a Centennial Award
• The John L. Hurst farm in Washington County received a Sesquicentennial award
• The Johnson farm in Harrison County received a Centennial Award
• The Miller farm in Harrison County received a Centennial Award
• The Roy Wolf farm in Harrison County received a Centennial Award
• The Schneider farm in Harrison County Received a Centennial Award
• The Zollman-Price farm in Harrison County received Centennial and Sesquicentennial awards
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program has recognized more than 6,000 family farms that have impacted Indiana's economic, cultural and social advancement.
"As a farmer myself, I am proud to represent a district with so many Hoosier Homestead Award winners," Byrne said. "It takes tireless work and effort across generations to reach this impressive milestone. To have seven local farms receive this big honor is truly impressive and shows our commitment to upholding Indiana's agricultural heritage."
"Generational family farms are a proud part of our community, and it is important that we recognize them with Hoosier Homestead awards," Engleman said. "As part of a family with a designated Centennial farm, I understand the hard work, perseverance and commitment it takes to keep a farm in the same family's hands for more than 100 years."
To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are centennial, sesquicentennial and bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
