Byrne: Bill to increase transparency on human sexuality instruction passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2024) – A bill authored by State Sen. Gary Byrne (R-Byrneville) that would increase transparency of sexual education instruction in Indiana K-12 schools passed the Senate Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Senate Bill 128 would require school boards to approve human sexuality curricula and schools to publish a direct link to the information and educational tools being used to teach human sexuality in the classroom on their website.

"Indiana doesn’t have state standards for sexual education, so teachers lack direction for curriculum on this topic," said Byrne. "As a former school board member, I think putting the elected local school board in the driver's seat on this issue makes sense and allows parents to better decide whether they want their child to receive this instruction."

SB 128 will now move to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration. To learn more about the bill, visit iga.in.gov.
