Brown's workforce data, cybersecurity bills pass Senate

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 31, 2024) – Two bills authored by State Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne) that would address workforce data and cybersecurity issues in Indiana passed the Senate this week.

Senate Bill 148 would require more oversight reporting for entities that receive taxpayer dollars to provide job training, ensuring these dollars are being used effectively and are leading to good-paying careers for Hoosiers who rely on them.

Senate Bill 150 would begin the process of establishing guidelines for political units to use in protecting their data and networks against hackers.

"Safeguarding Hoosiers' hard-earned taxpayer dollars and protecting consumer and workforce data are issues that should always be prioritized by lawmakers," Brown said. "I am pleased to see these bills move through the legislative process because both serve as an additional step in better supporting Hoosier taxpayers and protecting the Indiana workforce."

SB 150 would also create the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Task Force to study and assess the use of AI technology by state agencies. Members of the bipartisan task force would consist of three legislative members, three state employees and four lay members. A report of the findings must be submitted to the General Assembly before Oct. 31, 2024.

"AI can be hard to regulate because of how quickly it's evolving, which is why only a few states have passed legislation to study its uses," Brown said. "SB 150 would spark necessary conversation among state lawmakers on how to best ensure Hoosiers and their data are being better protected."

SB 148 and SB 150 will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
