While warm weather is still here, summer break is coming to an end for Hoosier students across the state.
As families gear up for a new school year, it's important to know what's changed in education.
Starting this school year, under a law passed by the General Assembly in the 2025 session, the state will implement a new A-F school accountability grading system. This new system gives the public a better understanding of a school's academic performance and how districts prepare students for their careers.
It’s no surprise to hear cellphones have become a huge distraction for students in the classroom, making it harder for teachers to do their jobs and for students to concentrate on their learning. Recognizing this issue, Senate Republicans passed Senate Enrolled Act 78 to prohibit students from using cellphones and other wireless devices during the entire school day from bell to bell. Make sure you read your school corporation's specific guidelines for this new law to ensure students are properly prepared for this change.
It is important to teach students about being productive members of their communities in school and provide them with opportunities to join organizations that reflect that value. That’s why Senate Republicans championed a new law that requires schools to allow organizations like Scouts or military recruiters to talk with students at least twice a year.
With these changes in mind, Senate Republicans wish all students, families, teachers, administrators and staff a great school year!
