Automatic Taxpayer Refund Available for Hoosiers on Social Security

Thursday, March 23, 2023

Indiana is on track to return nearly $1.5 billion to Hoosiers thanks to our state's automatic taxpayer refund (ATR) law.

However, social security income recipients need to file a 2022 income tax return to receive the $200 refundable credit they are entitled to receive under a law passed in August 2022.

Social security income recipients may also be eligible for additional tax relief through the Unified Tax Credit for the Elderly, which is also a refundable state tax credit that must be claimed before June 30.

2022 federal and state income tax returns are due April 18. Qualifying Hoosiers can file their taxes for free through INfreefile. Learn more about INfreefile here
