Alting: Bill to improve elevator safety passes House committee

STATEHOUSE (April 3, 2019) – A bill authored by State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) that would help improve elevator safety in Indiana recently passed the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and Public Safety unanimously.

Senate Bill 485 would make it a Class C infraction if an elevator contractor or a person who works under them, operates on a regulated lifting device without a permit.

“With approximately 19,000 regulated elevators, escalators and other lifting devices in Indiana, it is important we take the appropriate steps to ensure they are maintained to keep Hoosiers safe,” Alting said. “This bill would make sure any work done on a lifting device is carried out by a state-licensed operator, keeping our elevators running smoothly.”

SB 485 will now move to the full House of Representatives for further consideration.
