Indiana State Parks will take part in the annual First Day Hikes event on Jan. 1, 2026, offering Hoosiers an opportunity to start the new year outdoors. This initiative is designed to encourage people to spend time outside in the fresh air and explore Indiana's public lands.
Across Indiana, participating state parks will offer a range of guided and self-guided hikes throughout the day. Hike options vary in length and difficulty, making them accessible for all experience levels. Some hikes focus on scenic landscapes, while others focus on educational experiences related to nature or local history.
First Day Hikes will operate regardless of weather, with park staff adjusting routes and programming as needed to ensure safety. There is no additional cost to participate in First Day Hikes beyond standard park admission where applicable.
With more than 700 miles of trails in Indiana's state parks, and hundreds of miles of additional trails throughout the state, Hoosiers of all ages can enjoy a wide range of trails.
First Day Hikes help highlight the wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities available year-round and are a simple way for Hoosiers to start the new year off on a healthy note.
