Zay presents dependent child exemptions bill to Senate committee
STATEHOUSE (Jan. 17, 2024) — State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) presented Senate Bill 98 to the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy, Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Zay's bill aims to build upon Indiana's strong record as a pro-life state and traditional Hoosier values. SB 98 would allow parents to claim their unborn child as a dependent very early on in the pregnancy for the purpose of the state's income-tax exemption. This bill would provide support for the expecting family as well as incentivize the mother to begin prenatal care early on in hopes of helping to decrease Indiana's infant mortality rate and protect the life of the unborn child.
The committee heard from several supporters after Zay's presentation, including testimony from Micah Clark with the American Family Association of Indiana, Jodi Smith with Indiana Right to Life and Alexander Mingus with the Indiana Catholic Conference. All three testified in strong support of Zay's bill.
"I would like to thank the chairman, State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle), for allowing me the opportunity to present my bill to the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy. I would also like to thank those who came to testify, both in opposition and support," Zay said. "Having the bill heard is a great first step in signaling even more support for expecting mothers and protecting unborn babies. I plan to continue my work on this legislation, taking into account the testimony from today and the discussions I will have in the future. "
