Zay reflects on IDOH's fourth-quarter abortion report

STATEHOUSE (March 6, 2024) —Indiana's recently released Terminated Pregnancy Report for the fourth quarter (Oct. 1 – Dec. 31) of 2023 showed the major advancements Indiana has made to protect life at all stages, said State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington).

In 2022, the General Assembly passed Senate Enrolled Act 1(ss), which bans most abortions in Indiana. This law went into full effect in August 2023 and since then, abortion rates have dropped drastically. According to the fourth-quarter report, there were 46 terminations between Oct. 1 - Dec. 31, 2023. When compared to the third-quarter total of 763 terminations, the results from the fourth-quarter report show the effectiveness of SEA 1.

"Indiana is one of the strongest pro-life states in the country, which is why I am extremely happy with these results," Zay said. "SEA 1 is critical in protecting the unborn and supporting Hoosier families. Now that it is in full effect, we are starting to see how impactful it can be. However, the fight is not over and I will continue defending the sanctity of life."

Zay has a proven record in protecting the unborn and supporting Hoosier families. In 2022, Zay fought for and supported SEA 1 until it was passed by the General Assembly. This year, Zay authored Senate Bill 98, which would allow an unborn baby to be considered a dependent child, allowing the parent(s) to claim income-tax exemptions.

Continuing these efforts, Zay recently visited the Women's Care Center in Indianapolis to honor them for their great work and commitment to mothers and children from the point of conception to kindergarten.

As a lawmaker in Indiana, Zay is committed to serving and protecting all Hoosiers, including those who are unborn.

Constituents with questions, comments or concerns about this issue or any others are encouraged to contact Zay by email at Senator.Zay@iga.in.gov or by phone at 317-234-9441.
