Raatz: When immigration law not enforced, Hoosiers bear cost

STATEHOUSE (April 30, 2024) – State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond) is highlighting the importance of a new law passed this year to push back against illegal immigration in Indiana.

“When the federal government refuses to enforce immigration law, communities all across the U.S. are impacted, which is why I support Indiana’s recent decision to deploy 50 Indiana National Guard soldiers to the Texas border,” said Raatz. “Not to mention, when local communities refuse to enforce immigration law, Hoosiers bear the cost.”

Raatz co-authored Senate Enrolled Act 181 this year, which gives the attorney general the power to sue local governments and college campuses that refuse to comply with federal immigration law. The bill revisits a 2011 law that banned sanctuary cities, which became unenforceable after an Indiana Supreme Court decision in 2022.

“If we are putting the brave members of our National Guard in harm’s way to address the negative consequences of the federal government refusing to enforce immigration law, the least we can do is to ensure immigration law is followed in our own state,” Raatz said.

SEA 181 will go into effect July 1. To read more about the law, click here.
