Alting Honors Jack Schult, Lafayette Teacher and Coach

STATEHOUSE (March 7, 2017) — Today, State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) honored Jack Schult on the Senate floor for his distinguished career as a teacher and coach in the Lafayette area.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 29 honors Schult on his retirement and thanks him for his dedicated service to students and athletes around the state of Indiana.

A native of Lafayette and a graduate of Jefferson High School and Purdue University, Schult has worked with the Lafayette School Corporation for more than 50 years as a teacher, administrator and coach.

“Schult is an Indiana icon,” Alting said. “His career in the Lafayette community, especially his accomplishments as a coach of various sports, is one for the history books. Personally, Schult has impacted my life not only as a young man, but as an adult. I will be forever thankful for his friendship, and it’s truly an honor for me to recognize his life and achievements.”

Some coaching accomplishments Schult has received over his 50-year career include:

  • Third-highest number of sectional championships and the state record for 29 consecutive sectional championships;
  • Four state championship rings – one for tennis, one for basketball and two for baseball;
  • North Central Conference Tennis Coach of the Year in 1975;
  • Inducted into the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985; and
  • Inducted into the Jefferson High School Hall of Fame in 2013.

Alting added that Schult has also been in two movies, “Hoosiers” and “Eight Men Out.” He has also written articles in the Scholastic Coach magazine, served as a program director and lecturer at the Indiana State Basketball Clinic, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Indiana Tennis Coaches Association.

Schult was joined today by his family; Bobby Cox, Commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association; Les Huddle, Superintendent of the Lafayette School Corporation; and Eric Rody, Chief Financial Officer of the Lafayette School Corporation.
