STATEHOUSE (March 2, 2017) — State Sen. Jon Ford’s (R-Terre Haute) Senate Bill 429 passed the Senate this week by a vote of 49-0.
SB 429 would allow a city, town or county that has a certified arts and cultural district to adopt an ordinance allowing the district to capture incremental state and local income tax revenue from the area. The funds would be distributed to the arts and cultural district and can only be used for the benefit of the district. It would also provide that an arts and cultural district certified by the Indiana Arts Commission is subject to annual review and must be recertified every four years.
“This bill will help promote Indiana’s certified arts and cultural districts and financially support them so that they can continue to grow,” Ford said. “Cultural districts attract creative people and tourists to communities, which can boost local economies and make art and culture accessible to more Hoosiers. It’s exciting for me to pass this because it’s continued the work from my time as chairman of the Indiana Art’s Commission.”
The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
