Leising: Cursive Writing Bill Passes Full Senate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 30, 2017) – An education bill authored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) passed the full Senate today.

Senate Bill 86, which would require elementary schools to add cursive writing to their curriculum, passed by a vote of 35 to 14.

“Being able to write in cursive is a life skill everyone should have, including elementary-aged children,” Leising said. “We use our signature to sign agreements, make purchases and validate our driver’s licenses, and our children need to be prepared.”

Cursive writing was a curriculum requirement until 2012.

SB 86 will now be sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.
