STATEHOUSE (Feb. 6, 2014) — The Indiana Senate was named Employer of the Year on Wednesday by Indiana INTERNnet, an internship-matching program run by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis), Senate Majority Caucus Chair, accepted the honor at Indiana INTERNnet’s eighth-annual IMPACT Awards luncheon, sponsored by Ivy Tech Community College. The IMPACT Awards recognizes excellence among interns, employers and career development professionals in the Hoosier State.

“The Senate’s internship program is one of the best, and it attracts some of the brightest, most talented students from our state,” Merritt said. “Our interns are invaluable to us as lawmakers and to Senate staff during the legislative session. They do such a great job serving this state, and the program deserves recognition.”

The Senate was named Employer of the Year in the non-profit category for its annual internship program, which fosters networking and professional development opportunities as well as direct assistance with job placement. The Senate offers paid legislative, communications, legal and information technology internships.

Senate Majority Staff Director Jen Carlton said 88 percent of the Senate’s legislative team is staffed with former interns.

“Our internship program focuses on training and professional development. In addition to hands-on legislative work, Senate interns have the opportunity to meet and speak with prominent leaders in politics, business and public service,” Carlton said. “When hiring new staff members, we often look to former interns because we know they’ve been adequately prepared for today’s demanding workforce.”
