[s7] Sen. Hershman: Budget Committee Approves Purdue Funding Requests, Including Wang Hall Sublease

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 11, 2012) — State Budget Committee members approved three funding requests for Purdue University West Lafayette projects on Monday, including a sublease agreement that will give the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) more research space, State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) said.

Hershman, a budget committee member, said Purdue ECE is now approved to sublease a part of Seng-Liang Wang Hall, a facility that will be built in the Purdue Research Foundation’s Hayes Triangle District Development on Northwestern Avenue.

“Purdue’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering is the largest graduate student research program on the West Lafayette campus,” Hershman said. “Wang Hall will be built across from other core ECE facilities. It will give faculty, staff and students access to new laboratories, ultimately allowing the scholars to upgrade and expand their research capabilities.”

The Wang Hall sublease will be financially supported through Gift Funds and Capital Reserve for Buildings Funds. School officials first identified the need for an expanded space in 2008.

Hershman said Purdue officials additionally requested funding to install a new fire alarm system that will bring Krannert Building up to current National Fire Protection Association code. University general funds and student fees will fund the project.

“This facility houses the Krannert School of Management, meaning it’s used by students, staff and visitors alike,” Hershman said. “Keeping the building up-to-date and in compliance with code is necessary to ensure a safe environment.”

State Budget Committee members also supported funding for steam, chilled water, domestic water and electricity metering installation at main campus buildings, which is expected to result in better energy management. Money from the Infrastructure Reserve Fund will be used.
