Ensuring Safe Elections

Tuesday, April 9, 2024

Fair and secure elections are integral to a productive democracy, which is why it is critical for Hoosier voters to know if artificial intelligence (AI) or other advanced technology is being used in political ads, and ensure only eligible voters are casting ballots.

This year, Senate Republicans worked to pass legislation that improves election integrity and security in Indiana.

House Enrolled Act 1133 requires that if political ads feature AI generated images, audio or video that is so realistic a reasonable person might not know they're fake, they must include a disclaimer on their material so voters know what's authentic and what's fraudulent.

AI is still a relatively new concept, and while experts are attempting to grasp a better understanding, it continues to advance much faster than it can be studied.

Without these new guardrails in place, anyone could use AI to create lifelike videos or imitate someone's voice to deceive Hoosiers in the upcoming elections.

To improve our election security, Senate Republicans passed House Enrolled Act 1264. This new law provides county clerks and elections offices with more tools to help identify registered voters who may be ineligible or hold inaccurate records and help clerks take steps to update, confirm or repeal voter registration.

This will help ensure all ballots are cast by people who are legally eligible to vote in Indiana.

With the primary elections coming up in May, it is important Hoosiers feel confident their vote is among other valid votes and candidates are using real and truthful information while campaigning.
