Dearborn County farms honored with Hoosier Homestead Award

STATEHOUSE (March 25, 2024) – Area legislators are recognizing the latest local recipients of the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Represented by State Sen. Randy Maxwell (R-Guilford) and State Rep. Randy Lyness (R-West Harrison), the Andrews-Probst farm and the Gaynor farm, both located in Dearborn County, received Centennial awards.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program honors families who have made significant contributions to Indiana agriculture. Instituted in 1976, the program has recognized more than 6,000 family farms that have impacted Indiana's economic, cultural and social advancement.

"Indiana continues to be recognized as the top agricultural state in the nation, which is due in large part to our local farmers' dedication to maintaining their farms for generations," Maxwell said. "Thank you to the Andrews-Probst and Gaynor farms for your hard work and congratulations on reaching this great achievement."

"Farming has been one of the driving factors of Indiana's success over the years, and thanks to these farmers our state can continue to grow," Lyness said. "We all owe a debt of gratitude to these families for their work, helping to keep Hoosiers fed and boosting our economy."

To be named a Hoosier Homestead, farms must be owned by the same family for at least 100 consecutive years and consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 of agricultural products per year. The award distinctions are centennial, sesquicentennial and bicentennial – for 100, 150 and 200 years, respectively.
