Carrasco: Bill to expand natural disaster
financial assistance moves to governor's desk

STATEHOUSE (March. 5, 2024) — A bill authored by State Sen. Cyndi Carrasco (R-Indianapolis) that would increase the maximum amount of financial support eligible entities and property owners can receive from the State Disaster Relief Fund unanimously passed the Indiana House of Representatives.

“Last summer, Indiana faced tumultuous weather that left families and businesses in financial strain," Carrasco said. "It is my goal to ensure that Hoosiers and their communities have access to funds after a devastating disaster."

Senate Enrolled Act 190 would change how the amount of financial assistance an eligible entity may receive from the fund is calculated. It would also increase the amount of loss that may be compensated for damages to an individual's property from $10,000 to $25,000.

"This bill is a step toward helping communities across the state recover from natural disasters," Carrasco added. "When disaster strikes, Hoosiers shouldn't be concerned about money over safety. I am proud to help create a better Indiana."

SEA 190 is Carrasco's first bill to move to the governor's desk for his consideration. To track bills on the governor's desk, click here.
