Get to Know: Sen. Blake Doriot

Friday, March 10, 2017

Newly-elected State Sen. Blake Doriot’s (R-Syracuse) role as a public servant requires him to spend a lot of time at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. But when the Indiana General Assembly is not in session, he prefers to lead a small-town life at home.

Life outside of the Statehouse

Syracuse, Indiana, a city of about 2,810 people, is the place Doriot has called home his entire life.

Growing up, the area was a prime spot for him to hunt, fish and play sports. These days, he has added a new hobby - gardening.

“I love to raise hot peppers, but for some reason, they don’t love me as well,” he said.

Doriot says it is the people of Syracuse who have kept him around town all of these years.

“It goes all right back to the people,” Doriot said. “We’ve got this crazy work ethic up there where everybody wants to get things done and get things done right. It’s just home.”

It is this work ethic that Doriot has implemented in every career he has held, including his current work as a senator.

Path to public service

Born to a family dedicated to public service, Doriot developed a desire to serve others. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Doriot served as county surveyor in Elkhart County for 24 years.

“My family…it’s our duty to do that,” Doriot said. “We can help those that can’t help themselves.”

First-year goals

Helping others is still at the top of Doriot’s list now that he holds the title of Senator, but as a freshman, his main goals this session are to survive and pass good legislation for his constituents and the state as a whole.
