Indiana Bicentennial: Celebrating 200 Years of Hoosier History

Thursday, September 8, 2016

Indiana became the 19th state admitted into the Union on Dec. 11, 1816. To celebrate Indiana’s 200 years of history and accomplishments, the Indiana Bicentennial Commission (IBC) has established many ways for Hoosiers to be a part of this year’s Bicentennial celebration.

One of the largest Bicentennial events taking place is the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay. The torch relay route spans 3,200 miles with nearly 2,000 torchbearers from each of Indiana’s 92 counties. The relay will visit 260 cities and towns, 17 state and national parks, nine lakes and rivers, 27 national, state and local sites of historic significance, 22 colleges and universities, and many other landmarks and destinations.

The relay will begin in Indiana’s first state capital of Corydon on Sept. 9, and conclude in Indianapolis on Oct. 15, with a celebration on the Statehouse grounds. For more specific route information and a list of torch relay events in your community, visit www.Indiana2016.org/torchrelay.

The IBC also has other events highlighting Indiana’s history through a variety of educational, cultural and interactive programs. These events run through December with locations throughout the state.
