During the 2016 legislative session, Indiana Senate Republicans addressed the ongoing meth epidemic plaguing our state and our nation.
State Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport) authored legislation to help curb meth production by changing the way products containing ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, the key ingredients to making meth, are sold.
Senate Enrolled Act 80 allows a pharmacist to deny ephedrine or pseudoephedrine sales if the pharmacist believes the product will be used to make meth.
If the customer doesn’t have a relationship with the pharmacy, the pharmacist will make a professional determination of whether the customer has a legitimate medical need for the medicine. If no legitimate medical need is found, then the customer could purchase meth-resistant forms of the drug like Nexafed or Zyphrex D.
It is important for law-abiding Hoosiers to know they will still have access to the medicines they need, with most not even noticing a change in the way they buy common cold medicines.
SEA 80 goes into effect this Friday, July 1.
