Interim Study Committee Topics Announced

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Each year during the legislative session, members of the Indiana General Assembly conduct committee hearings, participate in debates and take part in discussions with constituents as they consider new laws that will address important issues facing Indiana.

With the 2016 legislative session complete, the interim months allow legislators to study policy issues that were discussed during session but required further review. This allows lawmakers to hear from experts, stakeholders and the public on various issues.

The bipartisan Legislative Council, comprised of eight members from the Indiana Senate and eight members from the Indiana House of Representatives, reviews these issues and assigns topics to be studied by the General Assembly in study committees.

The committees are made up of lawmakers from both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

This year, a few of the topics the Legislative Council decided to study include replacing the ISTEP test, developing a long-term funding plan for Indiana’s road infrastructure, annexation laws, school safety and treatment and recovery options for drug abuse and opioid addiction.
