Legislative Council Announces Interim Study Committee Topics

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

During the legislative session, issues arise that require further in-depth study and discussion before being addressed with legislation. Based on these issues, the Legislative Council assigns topics for the General Assembly to study each summer.

The Legislative Council is made up of eight members from the Indiana Senate and eight members from the Indiana House of Representatives. This year, Senate President Pro Tem David Long is serving as chair and House Speaker Brian Bosma is serving as vice-chair.

A few areas of focus the Council decided to examine this summer are ISTEP testing, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, redistricting and mental-health illnesses that lead to teen suicide. These topics will be discussed in their assigned summer committees, which are made up of lawmakers from both chambers.

In the coming weeks, House and Senate leaders will assign members to each study committee. Committees will meet during the summer and fall months in preparation for the 2016 session of the General Assembly.
