Messmer Report: Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

It is that wonderful time of year again, where family and friends come together from throughout our state and beyond to celebrate Christmas.

This year, my wife and I look forward to having our four grown children and their families over for the holidays.

As we have done since our children were young, the tradition of making Christmas candy and cookies is still in the works and going very well. Our kitchen will soon be filled with a variety of truffles and other treats ready to be delivered to family and friends.

When I was growing up, my mom gathered my siblings and I together to play our musical instruments and perform Christmas carols. My family plans to continue this tradition this year by playing for residents at local nursing homes.

Most importantly, my family will continue to attend midnight mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Jasper to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Like many, my family has suffered through hardships this year, but the birth of my wife and I's seventh grandchild reminds me of the precious gift of life that we must always work to protect.

To the medical professionals, emergency service providers and military personnel working this holiday season away from their family, I offer my thanks. Your dedication and sacrifice are greatly appreciated.

I pray each of you have a blessed holiday filled with joy, peace and happiness. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, from my family to yours.
