Messmer Report: Celebrating Independence Day

Celebrating Independence Day

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

On July 4 every year, Americans celebrate the birth of our country and the freedoms we all hold dear.

Since our nation's founding nearly 250 years ago, we have remained dedicated to protecting these freedoms and serving as a beacon of light for the rest of the world.

While our nation may seem more divided than ever, we must remember the value of living in a country where we as citizens can freely express our own opinions.

As a state senator, I am often reminded of this right as Hoosiers from across the state regularly visit the statehouse to express support or opposition for various issues and causes.

Independence Day is a reminder that we must work so these freedoms we cherish today will remain in place for future generations.

As we celebrate our great country with family and friends at parades and firework shows, we must never forget those who sacrificed their lives protecting us from danger.

The men and women of the Armed Forces who have served, or are currently serving, have dedicated their lives to protecting all Americans and our individual liberties.

We must also safeguard the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and continue to keep their loved ones in our prayers. May we never take our freedoms and their service for granted.

From my family to yours, I wish you a happy Independence Day!
