Messmer: Bill establishing construction workforce task force passes Senate

STATEHOUSE (Jan. 26, 2024) — A bill authored by State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) that would create a task force to study Indiana's construction trends unanimously passed the Senate Thursday, Jan. 25.

Senate Bill 223 would establish the Building Indiana's Construction Workforce Task Force to review construction workforce trends, including wages and issues impacting construction workers in Indiana.

"Indiana continues to invest in local infrastructure, which is why we need construction workers to meet the demand," Messmer said. "The Building Indiana's Construction Workforce Task Force would allow the state to gain a better understanding of what the industry needs and how to best to equip construction workers for the job."

The 16-member task force would include six legislators, one representative from Ivy Tech Community College, one representative from Vincennes University and eight governor-appointed members.

SB 223 will now move to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration.
