STATEHOUSE (Feb. 13, 2024) – A bill authored by State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) that would revolutionize collaboration between more than 200 small breweries in Indiana unanimously passed the House Committee on Public Policy today.
Senate Bill 205 would allow a small brewery to utilize unused equipment from other small breweries to meet demands and explore growth opportunities in the industry.
"Businesses collaborate with each other all the time," Alting said. "This bill would allow artisan brewers throughout Indiana to work with one another to help meet seasonal demand fluctuations for their product."
The idea for this legislation came from discussions with the owners of the Lafayette Brewing Company and People's Brewing Company.
SB 205 would require a business holding a small brewer's permit to produce at least 40 barrels of beer at its licensed premises the previous calendar year while also keeping the 90,000 barrel production limit in place.
"This bill will help small brewers throughout Indiana grow and the artisan beer industry expand," Alting said. "I am glad to see it continue to receive widespread support in the House of Representatives."
The bill now moves to the full House of Representatives for further consideration.
