STATEHOUSE (Feb. 9, 2024) – State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) authored a bill this year to require a landlord to repair or replace an essential item within 24 hours of an issue being reported at a rental unit.
Senate Bill 235 would have allowed a tenant of a rental property to bring an enforcement action against a landlord by providing notice of the property owner's noncompliance.
"Tenants pay rent with their hard-earned money and have the right to live in safe homes," Alting said. "Senate Bill 235 would add much-needed protections for tenants and I was proud to author this legislation this year."
Alting authored the bill after hearing multiple stories from throughout the Lafayette area about landlords not properly taking care of significant issues on their rental properties.
The bill did not receive a committee hearing during the first half of the 2024 legislative session, and therefore will not move forward this year.
"While I am disappointed SB 235 was not heard in committee, I remain focused on working to present meaningful legislation next year that will protect tenants from irresponsible landlords," Alting said.
