Messmer Report: Studying construction trends in Indiana

Studying construction trends in Indiana

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

Indiana has worked hard to invest in infrastructure projects across the state.

These projects help make our roads safer, energy more reliable, water cleaner and provide jobs so Hoosiers can support their families.

With construction jobs planned for the coming years, it is important for the state to understand workforce trends among construction workers.

This year, I am authoring Senate Bill 223, which would establish the Building Indiana's Construction Workforce Task Force.

The task force would review construction workforce trends across Indiana, wages and wage trends impacting construction workers in the state. It would also study resources available for workforce development in the construction industry, construction workforce training opportunities in K-12 and postsecondary education, and recruiting efforts to increase participation in programs currently available during the interim.

The 15-member task force would include six legislators, one representative from Ivy Tech Community College, one representative from Vincennes University and seven members appointed by the governor.

Under the legislation, the task force would need to report its findings and recommendations before Nov. 1 of each year. The task force would conclude on Dec. 31, 2027.

Senate Bill 223 has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor and will be heard this coming week.
