Messmer Report: Senate Republicans to focus on literacy, workforce development

Senate Republicans to focus on literacy, workforce development

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

State lawmakers are busy finalizing their bills for introduction to the Indiana General Assembly, which will reconvene for the 2024 legislative session on Jan. 8.

In recent years, Indiana has had one of the strongest economies in the country. In 2022, for example, the state beat all others in the Midwest for the fastest growing economy and ranked as the sixth-fastest growing economy in the U.S.

According to numbers released by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, more than 200 companies committed to move or expand in Indiana in 2023, an investment of more than $28.7 billion and creating 21,866 new jobs.

While this economic growth is good news for Hoosiers, there is still work to be done to make Indiana an even better state to live, work and raise a family.

This year, Senate Republicans will focus on literacy and workforce development so more Hoosiers have a chance to succeed.

According to the Indiana Department of Education, nearly one in five third graders in the state did not read at grade level during the 2021-22 school year.

Senate Republicans will work to improve literacy rates among Hoosier children during the upcoming session, which must adjourn on or before March 14.

In addition, concentrating on workforce development legislation will ensure Indiana keeps pace economically and Hoosiers are ready to fill jobs for decades to come.
