Messmer Report: Indiana Senate to meet for Organizational Day

Indiana Senate to meet for Organizational Day

By State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper)

On Nov. 21, lawmakers from both the state Senate and House of Representatives will meet at the Statehouse for Organizational Day – the ceremonial beginning of the 2024 legislative session.

The Indiana General Assembly is a part-time citizen legislature, so lawmakers meet at the Statehouse to craft legislation for only a portion of the year. This allows Hoosiers to serve as representatives or senators while also being able to live and work in the communities they represent.

Here in Indiana, we alternate between "long" and "short" sessions. Even-numbered years, like 2024, are "short" sessions while odd-numbered years serve as "long" sessions.

The state's budget is only considered during odd-numbered years and will be brought up again in 2025. The 2024 session must conclude by March 14.

In recent months, lawmakers, including myself, researched different issues and spoke with constituents across the state to determine what the legislature can do to help individuals, communities and businesses.

We also met with fellow legislators and stakeholders in interim study committees to consider potential topics for the upcoming session.

I look forward to returning to the Statehouse in early January to represent Senate District 48 to tackle important issues and continue to make Indiana a great place to live, work and raise a family.
